Image encryption was first introduced to the Internet by our team in 1998 and those solutions have evolved some more, but today remain unsurpassed.

Our earlier image viewers for encrypted images for display on web pages were basically java applets, but there were similar to what some competitors ere promoting, which were only normal applets. ArtistScope's security applets will run in all web browsers and on all platforms. Images loaded from a web site are secure because they are encrypted and remain encrypted when located in cache. As an image loads it is decrypted by the security applet while retaining what you see on the web page in memory.

Domain lock was developed to ensure that the encrypted images can only be displayed from the web site that they owns them.

A brochure about a competing product is written about their encryption as "RSA RC4 40/128bit". What encryption algorithms are used by ArtistScope?

Claims by vendors citing particular algorithms and encryption strengths can be suspect. Not only may they be trying to impress by citing known encryption techniques, but they may be the only method that they know about or the only method that was compatible with their project. Or it may have been the only method that could be obtained for free. Today most techniques are available as free modules to include in projects and being free are readily available for hackers to study.

Broadcasting the encryption techniques used to would-be hackers can be a starting point for undoing, especially if the key for decryption is easily obtained. So naming the method can be a mistake and one has to wonder if the vendor is stupid or using that method at all.

It has been said that some of the encryption algorithms used during the last world war were never cracked and have only been decrypted recently using an enormous amount of computer resources (the equivalent of what they have at NASA). Even in these cases the password needed to be know for decryption to be possible.

So what encryption method does ArtistScope use?

The very first release of our image encryption used a modified version of an algorithm that was created during the 2nd world war which was never cracked. Since then our algorithms have evolved as the technology has matured, but in no cases have we been able to use "out of the box" solutions because while a readily available module may be good for encrypting and decrypting a document comprised mainly of text, when dealing with images and other complex media they fail miserably. Sometimes they can be modified and sometimes the choice can be limited. But we are not going to tell you or the many wanna-be imitators of our technologies what works and where.

For similar reasons some of our technologies are provided to licensed users only.
