Once upon a time copy protection for images on a web page was non existent.
Some speculation was made about delivering images on the fly and protecting the image's origin using CGI but no working examples evolved.
In 1998 our team released Secure Image to encrypt images for web pages.
Later that year we released Link Protect to prevent unauthorized linking to images and web pages.
While these tools were effective from all of the common saving quirks, they offered no protection from Printscreen or screen capture. The problem being that web page scripts just cannot do the job on their own, without a helper at system level.
In 1999 the CopySafe plugin was developed to control Printscreen and screen capture. The concept was both effective and novel and soon after other examples appeared using speculative funding. Unfortunately they did not survive the ever changing web environment and the fact that "copy protection" is employed by only a few.
Earlier versions of the CopySafe plugin worked similarly to anti-virus programs in that they need to know about the threat to be able to deal with it. It was effective from Printscreen and from most of the popular screen capture programs but it still had gaps.
In 2006 our team was joined by a new member with a fresh outlook and 12 months later version 3.0 was released for beta testing.
The June 2007 release of CopySafe version 3.0.0.3 is the most secure web solution possible today.
